Outdoor heat pump unit running beside a home on a frosty winter morning

A heat pump does both jobs from a single outdoor unit: it cools in the summer and reverses to pull heat into the house in the winter. For many Overland Park homes — especially all-electric ones, or homes with a gas furnace available as backup — it is the most efficient comfort system you can install.

Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold useful capacity far below freezing, which was not true of the equipment that gave heat pumps a bad reputation decades ago. Paired with a furnace in a dual-fuel setup, the system runs on the heat pump through the mild majority of a Kansas winter and hands off to gas only when the temperature makes gas the cheaper option.

Heat pumps also fail in their own particular ways. Defrost boards and sensors, reversing valves that stick between modes, a low charge that shows up as poor heating long before poor cooling, and outdoor units iced over because the defrost cycle stopped working — we diagnose all of it, and we know the difference between a normal defrost cycle and an actual fault.

Whether you are adding a heat pump, replacing one, or trying to get an existing system to behave, The HVAC Doc handles sizing, the dual-fuel changeover setup, thermostat programming, and the balance-point settings that decide when each stage runs. Configured correctly, you should never notice the handoff.
